Can Satan/other demons read our mind?

I am reading The Rite by Matt Baglio right now (and loving it!!) but I am confused about one thing. Can Satan and other demon’s hear our thoughts? At one point in the book, the answer seems to be no, but then later on, a story recounts how a possessed person sneered at a priest who was praying in his mind in French, saying “We know all languages.”
