Can someone explain this bible verse to me?

Because it doesn’t make sense so I need explanation. I always just knew that our true father is God but I never read that the devil is our father until now. The word “devil” must stand for something other than the actual devil, satan, whatever term he is called.
I am sure it doesn’t satan is our father in the literal sense, but still, it was a bit of a shock to read none the less.

Yes, the verse means exactly what it says. Jesus is indeed speaking of Satan being the father of those to whom he is speaking. He is not speaking to all of mankind, though. He is speaking to a specific group of Jews who have rejected Him. See the Haydock commentary on this chapter. Start around verse 27 and continue forward to get the context.

…either we are alligned with Yahweh God and He becomes our Father or we reject Him and, by default, Satan becomes our father!
