Hi! Can someone help me understand something? I accept that sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, but I have a hard time accepting the doctrine of Original Sin. Every bible-believing, Christ following church teaches that we are all sinners because of Adam and Eve, but how can this be true? Ezekiel 18:20 says, “The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.” It seems to me that God is saying that we are not sinners because of Adam and Eve, but because of our own choosing. It also seems to me that God is saying that we are not guilty of the sin that was committed by Adam and Eve. Also Jesus said we must become like little children in order to enter the kingdom of Heaven and the bible says elsewhere that no sin can enter into Heaven. I guess it could be argued that once we accept God’s salvation, our sins are acquitted, but then what about those babies who die before they grow up? Do they go to hell because they were “born sinners” and couldn’t accept God’s salvation (as a result of being babies and not knowing or understanding God’s salvation at the time)? Also, at what age does a child become accountable for his or her sins? As far as I know the bible doesn’t say at what age a person becomes accountable for their sins. Finally, how can people say that we are born sinners when the bible clearly says otherwise?
*You should get a Catechism of the Catholic Church (latest edition) and there you will find good explanations for all that is in the bible.

God bless

I have no clue what “church” or “churches” or “groups of people” some, not all, posters are referring to when they post about chapters in Genesis.

Apparently, a lot of posters are not aware that the Catholic Church has specific doctrines regarding chapter one of Genesis and chapter two of Genesis and Chapter three of Genesis.

It certainly would eliminate a lot of confusion on this thread and others, if posters would actually take the time to learn what the Catholic Church teaches in regard to the first three chapters of Genesis. If would also help if posters would figure out that the first three chapters of Genesis are different from the rest of the 47 chapters of Genesis.

Original Sin is not some sound bite nor can it be adequately learned from the cutesy children’s books with the smiling couple standing behind bushes with a lot of leaves appropriately placed.

Learning about Original Sin from God’s point of view is key. God’s point of view is expressed in Divine Revelation. Divine Revelation is taught by the Catholic Church. Yes, other churches and groups of people can teach “divine revelation”; however, it is the Catholic Church which completely teaches Divine Revelation in the Seven Sacraments.

If one wants to understand Original Sin, then one has to start with the purpose of human beings.

My suggestion (and the suggestion of others) is to study paragraphs 355-421 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition. This is not a page-turner.

Obviously, there will be questions and difficulties. That is usually because some, not all, people look at the people around them and promptly declare that God must be human just like us. 😦

Thank you all for your replies. However, your replies have done nothing to convince me that the doctrine of Original Sin is not biblical. The biggest reason I have a problem with Original Sin is because I see it as a kin to blaming someone else when you’ve done something wrong.
When anyone looks at people living around herself or himself and concludes that God must act like humans…

…it will be near impossible to understand God’s actions. God is Divine. God calls all of us to share happiness forever in His eternal life of joy. Humans, with their decomposing anatomy, are not divine. Humans are spiritual like God, but not equal to God. It is our spiritual soul which makes it possible for us to communicate with God.

The first step to understanding the Catholic teachings about Original Sin is to accept the fact that God and humans are not the same kind of living beings.

“I don’t think it is if that is how YOU view it. However, it’s my personal belief that the first 11 chapters of Genesis are literal and not allegorical at all. Question: was the “Wow. That was a very thorough analysis” directed at me or another poster? Follow up question: If it was directed at me, then were you being serious or sarcastic?” ~ Pahaliah26
No, it was not sarcastic, quite the opposite.

“Oh and in what scripture does it specifically say that women can’t be priests?” ~ Pahaliah26
It does not. My remark, however, was more about Nordskoven when he/she said that women were in one occasion the bane of the devil or used as such and that that was why they are not priests. The reason lie elsewhere - the apostles were all men and perhaps other reasons that escape me right now. There have been too many women that have been great in the Church through history to say such a thing. And I’m sure that that question about why they cant be priests has been answered thoroughly in this website. So, if my answer is not enough, one can look and you will find.

When you lie, cheat, envy, covet, disobey, etc. Adam and Eve don’t cause you to do that, YOU cause you to do that stuff.- Pahaliah

The catholic church teaches that.

But to explain and understand sin, it says many other things as well.
For example, Original Sin, the church says is really a removal of a gift from God to Adam and Eve. God gave them His very life in the their soul whereby they could be truely called sons/daughters of God. This gift was not owed to them but was a pure gift to them.

In the New Testament, this life of God is described by St. Paul as the Holy Spirit living in us as in a temple. This life of God was removed, just as today when someone who received this life at baptism will also lose this life thru mortal sin.

Since our first parents lost it, they cannot transmit to us what they don’t have. So we don’t have this life and the act that caused this to be lost, is Original Sin or fist sin of our parents.
So when we say that we inherit Original Sin,in reality we don’t inherit anything. But it is only a way to express how we were affected, namely, what we don’t have.

I think this is easier to see in every day life. What parents don’t have they can’t give to their children. So if parents had stocks worth millions and lost them in the stock market, they can’t give their children any of these when they die. In a similiar way with divine life in their soul. They lost it. And as it was a gift that was lost, God is not bound to give it back. So we don’t have now what they lost then. (But Jesus made it possible to gain it back thru baptism and belief in him.)

Original sin is different from our own personal sins. What we do now to cause sin, we bear the responsibility, because we are the ones making choices.

Just a thought.

👍

I think what you added to the conversation was definitely needed…
Although, I find the OP’s position regarding what we failed to do about “biblical” nature of Original Sin to be rather baffling…

I was only commenting on the passage he quoted… 🤷

Thanks Fred.
