How do Protestant denominations interpert Jesus’ grant of the “keys of the Kingdom of heaven” to Peter?
When I was in college (at a Presbyterian school) I was surprised to see that among the decorations in the chapel was a stained glass window with the “crossed keys” which I (as a cradle Catholic) have always understood as a symbol of papal authority.
I’m wondering how non-Catholic christians view it??
In a similar vein, many of my Protestant friends know and recite the Nicene Creed (with it’s reference to “one holy, catholic, and apostolic church”). I know that the “catholic” church in the creed can simply be understood as “universal” rather than “(Roman) Catholic.” But I’m not sure how Protestant churches view “apostolic.” Apparently they have a different understanding of Apostolic succession than we Catholcis do?
Any insights from the Protestant posters on this board would especially be appreciated!
