Let us assume for convenience’ sake that God has reaveal 100 discrete truths. Twenty of these were revealed in Judaism and are preserved within Christianity; thirty were revealed uniquely in Christianity–which is God’s pre-eminent but not His exclusive revelation of truths. Twenty are revealed in Mohammedism, ten each by Hinduism and Buddhism, the remainder are found in various and sundry other religious movements. In order to have the totality of Divine Truth one must needs blend the truths of Christianity with those truths found in other faiths. Chrisitanity would remain ‘pre-eminent’ but, without those other ‘truths’ found in other faiths, Christianity is an incomplete system of Divine truth. I know this notion is a heresy–I DON’T think the term ‘syncretism’ is it’s proper description. Does anyone know if there is a better name for such a belief? Thanks!

My church history book does not mention this. However, what you are talking about is similiar to New Age. New Age is a renewal of Gnosticism which means knowledge. In the final stages of New Age, people are asked to pay for these “secret truths”

and words that will cause magical things to happen. If a person wants to incorporate all of the religions that you mentioned including Christianity and add astrology, this great knowledge would be attractive to New Agers.

Crockerism, (as in Betty Crockerism?)

Seriously, I am far removed with Unitarians. How does this compare with them?

“Syncretism” might be the best name for it.

It’s an internally incoherent position, since truth agrees with truth. It’s hard to imagine a “truth” about divine things that would not be found in Christianity. Ordinarily, if it isn’t Christian, it will contradict Christianity…and truth cannot contradict truth.

When other religions claim to agree with Christianity, they usually refer to their own perversions of Christianity rather than the doctrines as actually presented in the Bible.

Why not syncretism? Syncretism can be understood as the fusion or attempted fusion of different systems of belief, either religious or philosophical. By its very nature, it is the closest one-word description we can ascribe to your idea.
