So, the Holy Spirit can dwell in someone who is not a Christian, eh?I would say yes because the Holy Spirt is one of three beings, All made up of one being God.

Remember this passage where Paul was preaching to Pagans:See the only trouble i am having is, I cant see the Holy Spirit dwelling in anyone if they arent Christian. Because it is the Holy Spirit that brings us to God and that is how we remain Christian. To me if you have the gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you, you are a Christian. Maybe im looking at this wrong. I just cant see someone having the gift of the Holy Spirit in them and not believing in God. To me they go hand and hand. This one im not connecting on. Again maybe im seeing this one wrong.
iaq,I’m not too sure whether this is the appropriate forum for the question, but please give me an answer.
I remember, a priest once told me that even a non-Christian could have the Holy Spirit. Is this Catholic teaching? Or was he giving his own opinion?
jean8, your post does not address the question that was asked, and therefore, is considered off topic. Furthermore, you appeared to use your reply as an attempt to proselytize, which is not the purpose of CAF and is a violation of forum rules. You might wish to consider reading these rules before posting.iaq,
1Cor.12:11 "All these are the works of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each as he determines,"the entire teaching should be read from verse 1-12
The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4)
God gives us the choice of coming to him. Rev.3:20, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me.”
Isn’t this lovely, God is a Gentleman. Anyone can come to him.
Don’t wait, invite Him into your heart today.
God bless,

I guess what i am trying to say is that in order for the Holy Spirit to dwell in you, you are a Christian, but you dont sometimes really know that you are. I cant explain it the way i am thinking it, im sorry. I just cant seem to find the right words. To me anyone that has good in them, and do good for people, may not really know about Jesus Christ because maybe they were not taught, so never were baptized or anything in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, so in our sense of the word Christian, they arent a Christian, but in order to have the gift of the Holy Spirit you are a Christian, you just dont know it. Im sorry i just cant explain what i mean,So, the Holy Spirit can dwell in someone who is not a Christian, eh?
I understand your point and agree with complete enthusiasm. But the OP asked if the Holy Spirit can dwell within our soul. After a valid Baptism, as I’ve shown, the Holy Spirit can dwell for at least some time in our soul… well, at least until we kick Him out by committing a mortal sin.Hello NotWorthy,
Let me preface all that I say here as subject to the magesterial teaching of the Catholic church. And to answer your question, yes the catholic church does say the methodist church has valid baptism. As well as, many other christian churches. (One example of a traditions baptism not valid is the Mormons. There hetrodox view of the trinity makes it invalid) But to go on yes, but you must remeber for the most part in America we’re not talking about what we would call “high churches” meaning those with perhaps seven sacraments. We’re talking about, at least in fundys or evangelical beliefs where they only have two sacraments. marriage and baptism. So to further my point yes a child can receive valid baptism in say an evangelical church and be placed in sanctifying grace, now the question is recovery once fallen due to mortal sin. These traditions don’t have sacramental confession. This sacrament was given by Christ to the Apostles. John 20:22-23. The power to forgive and retain. This is the way Christ gave us to recover from mortal sin. And this brings the distinction between mortal and venial sin. Venial sin the God head is not cast out. In Mortal sin it is. Hence mortal/death. Dying in a state of mortal sin for us as Catholics is a ticket to hell. Apart from the grace to have a perfect act of contrition. I surly don’t mean to come across as arrogant. It’s just our belief.**
And yet you’ve explained it quite well, thank you! That’s why its called a mystery, my friend!I guess what i am trying to say is that in order for the Holy Spirit to dwell in you, you are a Christian, but you dont sometimes really know that you are.
