“Many countries today have legalized gay marriage. Could such a marriage ever be possible in the Catholic Church?” this person asked. “Is it automatically invalid because they can never consummate the marriage or have children? I worry that governments might try to force Catholic priests to perform these marriage ceremonies.”

In the reply, this canon lawyer said “in short, the Church holds that the basic concept of marriage was created not by man, but by God. By definition, it necessarily involves a man and a woman, for the natural complementarity of the sexes was a divine creation–as the very first chapter of Genesis asserts… the Catholic Church will not, because it cannot, change any law which it holds to have been given to us by God himself.”

This reply is by a canon law professional, who teaches in Rome. Canon law is made up of the laws of the Catholic Church.

NO, it will never be possible and the Priest would HAVE to disobey governments on this. Canon law is based on God’s laws. God’s Laws cannot be changed by man. God Bless, Memaw

Read what the man said… “the Catholic Church will not, because it cannot, change any law which it holds to have been given to us by God himself.”

How does that at all open up the possibility of a change in the Church’s understanding of marriage?

Just because he happens to be a canon lawyer, and canon law can change, does not mean he’s saying that Christian Marriage is a matter of canon law. As a priest first, and a canon lawyer second, he’s simply providing the inquirer with an answer.
