Greetings, Our priest on many occasions leaves the altar after consecration to go to go to the lectern to read the first intercession prior to the sub deacon continuing with the rest of the intercessions. I did not think the priest was to leave Jesus unattended on the altar. I wanted to know if this is appropriate. Thank you. A.M.D.G.

In the Maronite tradition the first intercession (“O Lord God, at this moment in our sacrifice…”) is reserved to the celebrant to pray. There is no directive for him to remain at the altar, nor is there one for him to go to the lectern. I would think that it is more appropriate that he remain at the altar, but that is simply my opinion. I know of no offical Maronite decree to that effect.

Now, having said that, I am not a Maronite deacon so my knowledge in this area is limited.
