Can the sabbath be changed from a sunday to a monday or is sunday THE day?

What does this have to do with morality?

While I can see no reason to change the sabbath observance from Sunday to any other day, the church clearly has the authority to do so as it has been moved from a Saturday event to a Sunday one. That is all based on church authority. Sunday for the day Christ rose from the dead.

The Sabbath is Saturday.

Catholics do not celebrate the Sabbath. We celebrate the Lord’s Day, which is Sunday.

No, the worship of the Lord’s Day cannot be ‘moved’ to another day because it is not arbitrarily chosen. The Lord’s Day is the day of Christ’s Resurrection.

I suggest reading the entire Catechism section on this commandment for a better understanding of it.

Sunday is THE day.

It reflects the day that Jesus rose from the dead, so it would never be changed.

The only reason a ‘change’ might happen is if something needed to be done to correct the calendar in use, like when the Julian calendar changed to the Gregorian, which might mean the date/day of the current solar day might change, but we’d still celebrate the Sabbath on a Sunday.

Every Sunday we commemorate the joyous Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ - the feast of feasts - the most solemn day!

As we are reminded in the Paschal Canons of the Eastern Catholic Churches in the Byzantine tradition:

“This is the Day of Resurrection. O people let us be enlightened by it! The Passover is the Lord’s Passover, since he brought us from death to life and from earth to heaven. Rejoice, as we sing the hymn of victory!”

If you want to change the Sabbath, make each and every day the Sabbath, in thanks for the promise of salvation realized through the death and resurrection of Christ. :gopray2:

I just have to commend you on such a perfect and to the point response. There shouldn’t be another one in this entire forum. I think many Catholics still assume there is a Sabbath day that we are to adhere to, but anyone who reads the Catechism or the early Church Fathers will find out that the Saturday Sabbath has been done away with and replaced with the Lord’s Day, which is Sunday.

Just as circumcision was done away with and replaced with baptism, so was the Sabbath done away with and replaced with the Lord’s Day. The Sabbath was imposed on the Israelites to ensure they paid adequate attention and worship to God, but since Jesus has come and satisfied all that the Old Testament prophesied and practiced, we are not to follow the 600+ laws, which include above mentioned, because we are called to live in Christ, who is perfect love. I could continue my sermon, but I’ll leave it there!

God’s peace and love be with you all.

So is sunday the sabbath or not?

Is it evil to call sunday the sabbath?

Worship and setting aside time for God is never evil. Sunday is not the Sabbath.

Saturday is the Sabbath, which Christians do not recognize because we worship our Blessed Lord on Sunday, the Lord’s Day, the day of His resurrection.

Those who do worship on Saturday, though mistaken, are worshipping God, and in their knowledge, will, and faith, they are not sinning, but having real worship.

Just like the 33,820 Protestant churches can’t all be right about the Bible or faith, but in what they understand to be the true faith, if they are faithful, are truly worshipping God.

God love you,

Travis

Go read your Catechism.
I’ve looked at the treatise on the sabbath in the catechism and it seems to claim that we don’t celebrate the sabbath and yet that we do fulfill the third commandment which is called keep the sabbath day holy.

So how do we reconcile the fact that we celebrate the sabbath with the fact that we don’t celebrate the sabbath?

By reading the entirety of the CCC on this subject:
Sunday - fulfillment of the sabbath
2175 Sunday is expressly distinguished from the sabbath which it follows chronologically every week; for Christians its ceremonial observance replaces that of the sabbath. In Christ’s Passover, Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath and announces man’s eternal rest in God. For worship under the Law prepared for the mystery of Christ, and what was done there prefigured some aspects of Christ: Those who lived according to the old order of things have come to a new hope, no longer keeping the sabbath, but the Lord’s Day, in which our life is blessed by him and by his death.

2176 The celebration of Sunday observes the moral commandment inscribed by nature in the human heart to render to God an outward, visible, public, and regular worship “as a sign of his universal beneficence to all.” Sunday worship fulfills the moral command of the Old Covenant, taking up its rhythm and spirit in the weekly celebration of the Creator and Redeemer of his people.
Peace be with you!

So Sunday is not the sabbath. So how can it fulfill the sabbath commandment?

Is the sabbath a transferable thing that is separated from the day? It seems not since the catechism seems to define it as such in above quote.
