Can the souls in purgatory intercede for us?

Looking at CCC 958 it would seem that it is possible that souls in purgatory can intercede for us however in discussing this with someone the person said that this paragraph refers to the dead that are in heaven. I think that since it refers to all of the dead that it suggests that out prayers help the souls in purgatory to intercede for us. Please help clarify?
