Can this be fixed?

Hi Bryan, from the two posts you have made here you seem to be very big on taking responsibility for your actions and their consequences. I would be surprised if this (the taking responsibility) has happened all of a sudden. I see a bit of a treadmill - when things go wrong you see yourself as the cause and you take responsibility and try to improve yourself, and then you slip up, and so on…

It probably goes back way before your marriage, and has something to do with why you’re in a very tough job now. It’s also a part of what attracted your wife to you in the first place!

So, well done with taking responsibility - it’s something you are very good at! But, like any positive characteristic, it has it’s potential problems, and it can be difficult finding balance.

You and your family remain in my prayers,

Edmundus

… My problem has been infidelity, and major lack of communication. …
In my sig, you will see a link for a support group for people (mostly men) who are walking the path of recovery from impurity. It may be helpful if you find the infidelity and sexual temptations difficult to resist.

Praying for us all,

There is a movie - Fireproof and a book that goes with it - The Love Dare. They’re wonderful. My husband and I watched the movie and it sparked a conversation that we didn’t know we needed to have. Needless to say, we’re a lot stronger for it.🙂

God Bless,

Hope

👍 Excellent suggestion!

(The film seems to have an Evangelical Christian perspective, but it is a great model of rebuilding trust in marriage.)

I would also suggest contacting Retrouvaille retrouvaille.org/ They are a Catholic ministry for troubled marriages, even those where you are already separated or ready to divorce.

God bless you, your wife and children.

Hi Bryan

I feel for you and can relate somewhat to your situation. I’ve been married for 15 years to a wonderful woman but we are also going through some serious hardship at home in our marriage. I’ve tried to be a good husband, father, and provider but I let work and the stresses of life get in the way of being a good husband…I disconnected emotionally from my wife, and in turn for many years made her feel unwanted, unloved, and unappreciated. Never ever did I want to or intend to hurt her…but I did and now we’re struggling in a huge way and we’re not sure if we can salvage our marriage.

In pushing my wife away, I in effect pushed her into the arms of another man…or should I say men. Over the past two years, she’s had two relationships outside our marriage and these have broken my heart. I can and have forgiven her but I have trouble not blaming myself for pushing her into making decisions that I know she never would have made had I been a better, more emotionally connected and supportive husband. In short…I understand the guilt you feel because I feel the same type of guilt for the pain I’ve caused my wife.

I’ve been Catholic all my life but had a lapse of 15 years where I felt I could “do it on my own”. About 6 years ago, I felt the tug in my heart to “come home”. Honestly…without my faith, as imperfect as it is, I never ever could have survived that last three years. Through prayer, the sacraments, councilling via my Parish Priest, and God’s patience and love, I have come to terms my faults and mistakes. More importantly, I’ve learned about love…and forgiveness…and patience…and gentleness and humiliy, and making amends. I’ve learned the hard way…but I’ve learned and I know that with prayer, faith, patience, and an open mind…God will guide you to make the right choices and decisions that will allow healing.

My wife and I and still struggling in a huge way to re-connect emotionally. In addition, I am trying desperately to trust her again…and in all honesty, this is very hard and I know it will be a long road. We have talked separation but I pray we don’t choose that path as in my heart, I feel it would be a huge mistake and one which we may not be able to turn back from.

When I read your post this morning, I felt I could really relate and I prayed for you and your family. It’s so hard when you make mistakes and choices that hurt the people that you love. It’s also hard admitting your mistakes or that you need help. When I met my Priest asking for help…it was one of the hardest things I ever did…sitting in front of him and saying “I think I’ve screwed my marriage up”. I’ve since learned that the only way to heal and grow is to accept responsibilty for your actions, ask for forgiveness, learn, make amends, and grow from those mistakes. People can change and even if people don’t believe you can or have changed…don’t get discouraged. As they say, actions speak louder than words.

Faith, time, lots of prayer, and trust in God’s plan for your life will help you to move forward.

I truly wish you and your wife peace and healing.

God heard me!!! I went to visit my wife and daughter at her mother’s house…to try and give her a break and allow her to rest and relax, remember she is raising a 10 month old and she is almost 5 months pregnant. I spent time with my daughter, we went for a walk, we played on the floor with all her toys. I was even going to bathe her, but the wife said her mother had already done it earlier. I put her to sleep, and went to talk with the wife at the kitchen table. I asked her if they could use any of the appliances or furniture from our house, while she was there at her mom’s, and I could see it tore her apart to see her hopes and dreams of having her own little place to raise her children going down the drain. I tried my best to remain strong, I wanted so bad to hug her and tell her it’s going to be okay, butI didn’t, I felt she would push me away, plus I know I’d only make it worse. So i told her to take care, and I’d see them again tomorrow (today!). When I was on my way home, she sent me a text msg, telling me how it was hard for her to accept the fact that we would no longer be together. I told her to just leave it in God’s hands, and if we’re meant to be, then we will. She said she remembers being a little girl, and all her friends wanted this big house…she said not her…she just wanted a simple little home to raise a family in. It hurt me so bad, to know that I had been the one to crush those dreams, and thought I would never get the chance to rebuild this marriage. We continued texting one another, and she finally asked…“if I’m willing to go back, how would things be different?” I explained to her that I know what I need to do. I told her I am going to talk to a priest today, and will seek the sacrament of reconciliation as soon as I can, I will repent, and sin no more. Things kept looking up, and I finally called her. We agreed to try and make things work. I have already talked to a lady about Retrouvaille, I think my wife would be okay with that. To sum it all up, I know this is only by the grace of God, that he touched her in some way, to give “us” another chance. She even said she knows we must uphold the promise we made before God, and that when she married me, it was because she knew I was the man she wanted to be with forever. I can’t explain what I’m feeling right now. It’s alot of joy, yet I’m scared. I will continue to pray that God help me stay on the correct path, and not screw this up. I know what must be done, I just have to “man up” and do it, but I know I can only do it with the Lord’s help…it’s not something I can face alone. I cannot thank you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, enough for your prayers, kind words, and guidance. To me this is what a Catholic Community should be like, not judging one another, but offering help to those in need, as many of you have done for me. Now for those of you who are here to criticize and judge, no one is perfect, but God. I pray that one day your eyes may be opened, as have mine. Regardless, I take your comments constructively, and use them in the best way that I can. I am in awe at this moment at the mercy of our Lord. When I went to pray on Monday, I knelt before the cross with a heavy heart. I tried my best to ask for forgiveness, and suddenly the pain came pouring out. I cried like a baby and was truly seeking forgiveness, though I felt unworthy. It felt like 10 five gallon buckets of pain being poured out one after another…and jesus picked it all up, and told me “it’s gonna be okay”. I felt better after leaving, and now, I have been given another opportunity. I do not take this lightly, and am well aware of my previous actions, accept full responsibility, and know what I must do to remain in the grace of God. Again, a veryvery sincere and heartfelt Thank You to all of you who have been there in spirit and prayer these past few days. I am forever greatful. God has used you all as instruments in growing His kingdom, and to that I cannot Thank you enough. Until we meet again, maybe when we meet in heaven, I will get a chance to thank each of you in person. May God Bless You, today, always, and forever. Thank You!
Bryan

I forgot to mention something…yesterday when i went to visit them, we had put some fortune cookies in the baby’s diaper bag last week when we went to eat chinese food. I ate one, and thought “let me see what stupid quote they put in this one”. I usually don’t take fortune cookie messages to heart, but this one said “Love conquers All”. I was floored, I know God put that there for me. It was meant for me, and I feel he used it to get a message to me. just thought I would share that with you guys. thanks! God Bless!

Thank you for sharing all that has happened to you over the last couple days. God truly does work for us when we give ourselves to him unreservedly, doesn’t he? 🙂

Retrouvaille is a great idea. I hope you and your wife can go and benefit from their program. Community is very important for support. We are here for you, of course, but having some face-to-face contact is always a good idea to help you along. Is there a Knights of Columbus council at your parish or some other solidly Catholic men’s group? You might want to look into something along those lines to be with other faithful Catholic men who will support your faith and your commitment as husband and father.

God bless you and your family, Bryan! You have my prayers, as well. 👍

Kindness,

Retrouvaille!! Great suggestion! I’m a “card carrying member” … I go to CORE every month. It works! My husband and I are living proof!

A miracle! Deo Gratias! Your young family are in my prayers more than ever!
