I guess maybe what this comes down to is that I’m not sure I really know how to pray. One of the prayers I find myself pleading to God for, and really contemplating is that God will help me to desire what He desires for me.

My husband and I are childless after 2 years of marriage (trying on and off, I would say) A friend of mine recently said that he knows a priest who is known to “cure” infertile couples. Is asking for such a prayer right, or could God be calling us to accept our fate.

Feedback is appreciated.

Have you really been able to take time to come to God with this?
I mean honestly pray about it. I’m sure you have at least thought of things like adoption or foster care, but it doesn’t sound like you have asked God’s opinion on it.(i appologize for judging your prayer life. Unfortunately, i don’t really know you any better)

I would be wary of any priest that claims to be able to “cure” any specific ailment. especially one who is appealing to desperate couples. If you go, you may end up hearing verses like the faith of a mustard seed that moves mountains. Afterwords, if the “healing” still doesn’t work, all this man has to say is that you didn’t have enough faith.
On the other hand, we know God has the power to heal these things. We know he can, the question is if he will.
I would really go to God with this.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t take any offense at what you said. Is my prayer life what it should be? Certainly not. Have I (and my husband, and us together) prayed about this and spent time taking it to God? Yes, probably a disproportionate amount of time as compared to the other great questions of life. I don’t know what He’s telling me/us though. It’s really difficult to understand and we are just trying to be faithful, even while we are unsure what exactly that will mean for us. Adoption is in our minds (especially mine) but we do not have the finances to pursue that right now.

And FYI: as far as I know, the priest didn’t claim he can cure people. A friend of mine told me about this man and I think he used the word cure to describe the prayers he has offered which have helped infertile couples.

Again, thanks for the reply. Any other feedback is appreciated, if you wish to offer it.

Dear Cathy,

It is sometimes poor use of language to tell another that a priest “cured” someone of a certain malady, in ths case - infertility. What the person probably meant but did not convey to you in appropriate words was that they know a priest whose prayers have been effective before God in intercession for childless couples. It is always God who heals, and the priest or prayer intercessor is merely a channel to manifest God’s love to people through the power of the Holy Spirit.

There are individuals in our church (and even in other faiths) whether religious, clergy, or deeply prayerful persons, who have been gifted by God with healing ministries and use their gift for the faithful whom they feel led to pray for. We all know the good that St. Padre Pio performed while living on earth in order to help people to health. These saintly persons can help us, and God’s love has sent them specifically to manifest His compassion for our needs.

No doubt your friend has heard of good works done by this priest. I would trust him and humbly seek his prayer help. Even if there is no physical cure, there is often a spiritual blessing leading to acceptance and peace, or else a possible “word of knowledge” from God to cooperate with a physician/surgeon as the specific problem causing the infertility is disclosed through prayer.

Your faith will rest in God’s goodnss and providence, and if you do not find a remedy, do not give up in prayer until and unless God shows you the door is closed. He will help you in ways beyond all you can imagine. Honest.

With a prayer for your intention,
Carole
