Can two females be Godparents for a child?

In Mass this past Sunday there was a baptism. Nothing out of the ordinary but what I did find unusual was that the Godparents (sponsors) were both females :confused:. I thought it was either one sponsor or a male and female? Is this allowed and just uncommon?
