Can watching Movies be sinful?

How about media that contains blasphemy? I know thanks to Fr. Ripperger that if you deliberately decide to watch something with full knowledge that Our Lord’s name will be taken in vain, you are just as guilty as the people who produce the product.

I’m thinking about instances in which you had no foreknowledge. Should you immediately stop watching as soon as you hear the first blasphemy? Is it sinful to continue to watch even though technically you don’t know if will occur again. How many times does it have to happen before you become culpable if you do in fact become culpable?

The movies I watched contained the warning L. I was fairly certain this meant it could contain offensive language so I went and looked it up. All it said was rough language. Rough language could mean anything. Which brings up another question, is it sinful to listen to vulgar language? Next time I go to confession I’m going to discuss this with my priest.

All depends on the context I’d say.

Does whatever you’re watching lead you to do the same things that are depicted?

If watching shows and movies with foul language makes your language foul, then you need to watch shows with better language. If shows and movies with gratuitous violence and sex make you want to commit violence and have gratuitous sex, then you must turn it off and avoid it.

Some are led to bad behavior by watching it, others aren’t.

I have a clearplay DVD player that edits out all nudity blasphemy and extreme violence. It protects me from situations like that. You might want to check it out clearplay.com/

Hey, I just recently watched the move “The Watch”, I was expected some vulgar jokes and such but no nudity. It turns out there was a nude scene in the movie(I avoided watching as soon as it happened, I started to re-watch after). The thing is I was told by my friend a movie has no nudity and will probably just have some swearing and violence( which I guess I didn’t find to be to bad as I see swearing everywhere I go in this secular society.) but I guess he lied to me so I would come with him.

I do not feel this to be a mortal sin as I didn’t have full consent of will or knowledge that nudity would be in the movie, but I am wondering if going to this type of movie in its self would be considered sinful?(It is a comedy, but it was really bad, I wouldn’t recommend it. )
Movies are not intrinsically evil/immoral. So it depends on the movie and circumstance you attend it in to determine if you did something immoral.

From what you say, it seems like you obviously had no clue going in what you are going to see. First thing is you should ALWAYS check CNS reviews or IMDB content advisor to the movie you want to see. This will save you from going through this sort of thing again.

As far as your next course of action, try to avoid acting on the temptation you might feel as a result of the arousal due to the scene you saw.

Just pick up any movie made before 1965. No nudity, no profanity, no simulated sex. The whole family could watch it.
Exactly. There were clean titles like Birth of a Nation. Wholesome family fun, right? 😛

If you read the ratings before you watch the movie (which usually says if it has nudity) that should solve your problem.

I’d make 2 points:

1- if something happens to you without your consent it’s not a mortal sin. Maybe if you expose yourself to the risk of sin without wanting to sin it might be a venial sin in that case.

2- I am not sure ‘nude scenes’ constitute always as ‘grave matter’. It depends on the context. There is nude art in renaissance Churches, for example.

I don’t think seeing a movie with questionable scenes is in and of itself sinful. However, I think if a person starts repeating vulgar lines from a movie to be funny or is fantasizing about the more intimate scenes, then they have entered the realm of sin.
