Hello,
My husband and I are unable to have a baby without “help”. My husband has no sperm, so drugs will not help us. IVF was suggested, but we know that is agasint the Church’s teachings. We wish to pursue adoption, but another option suggested to us was embryo adoption.
While the embryos were created using IVF, and while they are not genetically related to my husband and I, they are babies, waiting for a womb. Isn’t it worse to let them stay in a state of suspended animation, or worse yet, to kill them, then to adopt them into my womb?
My husband was raised Catholic, and I am in the process of converting, and neither of us knew where the Church stood on this. We haven’t spoken to our Priest about it yet, but will if you do not know the answer.
Can we adopt embryos so that those babies have a chance at life, and so that we can become parents? I know that the Church views artificial insemination like laying with another man, but in this case, the eggs are already fertilized and the child would not be genetically related to either of us, just the same as with conventional adoption, only this way, we would get to love and nurture the child much sooner, and I woudl be able to experience the miracle of pregnancy and giving birth.
How does the Church feel about embryos that have already been created and that are no longer wanted by their genetic parents? Isn’t discarding them like abortion?
