It may be that the host explained himself further, and that the context of his comment would shed light on the point he was trying to make. As it reads here though, I would say that only Christ can offer the kind of mediation in which he stands in our place and bears the cost of our sins. We can pray for the alleviation of the temporal punishment due to another person for his or her sins. We can offer up our own sufferings for that person’s conversion or for that person’s release from purgatory. But it seems to me that we cannot offer vicarious atonement for sin in the way that Christ does.
