I have sort of a strange question. I was debating with my mom (who likes to play devil’s advocate). we were talking about abortion. then she said, can we really even kill someone? I mean, we have a soul, and can’t kill someone’s soul, so if they are still a person if they lose a limb or anything, they are still a person, but they are a person due to their soul. since we can’t kill their soul, can we really say we’ve killed them. please only argue the points, and do not attack my mother. thanks!

if God said “thou shalt not kill” i think that makes it pretty clear,

but yes, to kill the body is still killing, the point of killing being wrong is you’re robbing someones chance at proving themselves worthy of heaven, and it’s not our job to decide who is to die and who isn’t, that is Gods job,
when a body dies, it’s still death, and it’s still killing to force death upon them,
but death for an immortal soul, is hell, and we commit the sin of killing when we don’t do what we can to try and save a soul from going to hell, for example, admonishing a sinner, making sure someone who may be dieing receives the sacraments, or anything else that we can do to save a persons soul.

it’s just not any humans job to decide who dies and who doesn’t, when we go to be judged, it should be because we’ve been called to God, and not because we’ve been sent to Him.

you just have to understand that our human body is alive, and the definition of murder is to deprive of life, so…there ya go

You have to differentiate between killing the soul and killing the body. Since we have immortal souls created in God’s image, our souls cannot die. Killing one of our souls is impossible. Thus, everytime we speak of killing a person, we speak of killing the body.

The command is thou shalt not kill.

Although there is an argument that it’s a mistranslation of a Hebrew word for murder.

However, that’s just splitting hairs.

We have a language and like most languages it’s flawed. One flaw is the lack of commonly understood distinction between physical death (separation from the physical body) and annihilation. We can kill someone’s earthly physical life but not someone’s entire being, no.

In my estimation killing the soul is a grave sin, but then so is killing a physical body. By killing a person, we deny that God is the sole author of life. What if the person you kill is in a state of mortal sin and God’s plan was for that person to reform their life and do great things like St Paul did?

And if you kill a person who is unsaved and they go to hell?

Surely you kill a person then and place yourself in God’s place by acting out in judgment. God will pay them back, Christians are not to take revenge on others.
