Hello,

My husband and I would like to renew our vows in the Catholic Church by having it blessed. When we first were married we didn’t have a church wedding. However, this is my second marriage. My first marriage ended due to my ex-husband’s alcoholism. The pastor told me that the Catholic Church won’t recognize my second marriage as valid since my first one failed and wasn’t annulled.

Is this correct information?

Please advise and thank you!

Angela

Yes, the information is correct. All marriages are presumed to be valid until proven otherwise. If you are a Catholic and your first marriage was in the church then you would need to apply for an annulment.

Until your first marriage is proven to be invalid it is the presumed valid marriage.
