Can you explain Abortion and Ex-Communication

I’ve been wondering for years about the fact that one is ex-communicated from the Catholic Church if they’ve participated in an abortion. Does that mean forever? Does going to confession bring that person or persons back into communion and are they no longer ex-communicated?

I guess my biggest confusion surrounds the “ex-communication” terminology and what exactly does that mean?
