Can you explain Lent to me?

I am currently going through RCIA at the cathedral. I just started my first class this past Monday, and I know Lent is going to be starting on Wednesday. Can someone please explain to me what Lent is? A general overview and understanding would be good, so I will have somewhat of an idea when I head back to class on Monday.
