Can you explain the just war doctrine?

I was hoping you could help me with either the answer to or resources to help me understand if WW II, and other American Wars were either Just or Unjust. When I apply the Just War principles to our actions after Pearl Harbor and Germany’s Declaration of War against us, I do not get past the first requirement without thinking that it was not certain that the damage inflicted by the aggressor was lasting, grave, or certain. Thank You for any help you can give me.
