I actually well might because after all I’ve seen in life I simply wouldn’t even consider marrying someone I didn’t have that kind of respect for.

Note that my points against that custom still stand, the bridezilla factor not the least among them. 😛
Chivalry is not dead! 😃
When you find ‘‘the one’’…you’ll see…you’ll want to demonstrate chivalrous love for her. ;)🙂

May I intervene? lol This is somewhat of an old ‘inside joke’ whereby this came up in the past…about rings, and getting down on one knee, and chev (at that time) seemed put off by all of that…ALAS! He seems to agree with the idea now. Progress! :yup:

why would a man have a problem getting on one knee? they sure enjoy it when wo-

oh my crude sense of humor! slaps hand

and yes, it may be at a slower rate but men do progress 🙂

whatevergirl its been a month or two since ive been on here and i’ve seen you around the past couple days and keep forgetting to say hi!!! how are you btw!!! quick shout out to the lovely ms. whatevergirl (aka katie cruise) love her posts so much!!

I would imagine that in the history of the world, far more couples have been married without rings than those who have.

Rings are an extreme luxury for many people in this world, some who can barely afford to feed themselves.

ewwww!! loll…lol…kick back-

ya’ll (men) dont have to ‘shell out dough’ for no one, unless you take it upon yourself to do so…or if the woman you choose to marry is totally superficial…either way the choice is yours alone…

the question was asked because a friend of mine knows that her and her spouse not only can NOT afford a proper wedding (with a hall, people attending, you know what i mean) or even RINGS…and…we were discussing it because they’re ready to take the leap, and she feels she doesnt NEED a ring, and we just wanted to know if it’d be cool…as in…ok with tradition and the church…she has a lot of respect for keeping tradition and our faith, but…just cant afford the rings! 🙂

‘take one for the team’ lmbo…i havent used that term since high school…

oh oh- lol…or remember this one?? ‘if your down you’ll do it’

Well, my answer assumed more “usual” circomstances. No you dont’ need rings. I guess though, I can’t help but worry that they might not be ready financially even if they’re ready otherwise. That’s always a big thing to consider, $$$ is a gigantic source of stress.

If they can handle it, then wonderful go for it.

It is and it’s more fun this way. 😛

Besides, better dead than seen in the -zilla version.

Wrong presumption. 😉 I discussed this point in detail once including ranting on about mediaeval nobiliary etiquette than anyone could keep reading. The point there is not chivalry understood in the right way, but the skewed popular, folk version, popularised by idiotic troubadours from certain silly parts of France. Some of those guys actually performed a seigneural homage and referred to their flames as “midons” (bastardised version of “meus dominus” in masculine grammatical gender) and this is not the worst of it anyway. Sigh. I also provided a different possible root of that custom, one that could actually be acceptable, except it would be an anachronism at the current day and age anyway (no longer a common sign of respect when greeting one’s superiors). Plus, in some instances, it makes refusal hard and you’d better not make it hard on a woman to refuse or neither of you will be happy in that relationship. I could come up with more but who cares. I say this as one of the old-fashioned dudes that still kiss hands for a greeting, which says volumes.

J.C. Pennys dept. store has some beautiful sterling silver rings for very cheap prices. The rings are dipped in gold and when the gold wears off you still have the sterling silver that will last a long time. Prices are like $8. on up. Plus, some of the rings have the fake cubic cerconions that stay beautiful forever. The only difference is that cubics don’t weigh as much as diamonds but nobody can tell the difference in the beauty of the stone.

I bought me a silver ring with a large cubic for just $12.00. I love rings and I have lots of cheap ones that look like real diamonds.

Ross Store also has some beautiful silver rings real cheap. K-Mart and Target also has some beautiful sterling rings for $9. or more.

I buy my rings in all of those stores. Sterling silver is forever if you keep them in a plastic baggie where the air doesn’t touch them or if you wear them all the time.

I wish I could mail your friend one of my rings so she can have a marriage ring. In the tradition of marriage… it would be something old…but beautiful. I could mail it to her in care of her church. I am serious. Lucia

and chev i have NO IDEA what the HECK you were just going on about you gotta use plain english honey lmbo!!!

but, kissing someones hand seems chivalrous to me?? idk, i didnt look it up on dictionary.com but to me chivalry is just, being a gentleman, giving a woman respect based first on the understanding that she IS a woman…

yeah yeah some women dont deserve respect…but give them the benefit of the doubt and behave as a gentleman regardless…thats what I would think it means…I also think thats not such a bad thing, if thats what your saying…I think its equally as important, in the way that a woman should respect her husband and maybe sometimes ‘do as he says’ even if maybe she doesnt really want to, as it is for a man to respect a woman and in various ways cater to her -oh lord whats the word for it…? i’ll make one up ‘emotionality’ lmbo…

know what i mean?

I agree with this. I was talking about this with my husband recently…and there are SO many wholesalers out there now, that weren’t around when he proposed. You can get a STEAL OF A DEAL, like not even $500 for a beautiful diamond, or whatever you like…or just a plain band for under $100. If a guy doesn’t have $100 to buy a ring for my dd…how is he going to take care of a family? It’s not about money, but it becomes obvious. To me, and to generations back into Italy in my family, where money was hard to come by for my ancestors…those men bought their women, rings as a sign of proposal and commitment.

And what Lucia said…you can buy a CZ for a fraction of the cost…set it in gold or silver. I love those, by the way, Lucia…I love all jewelry. 👍 JCP has a nice collection!

I told my dd…if you come home someday, shouting through the house…‘we’re engaged,’ and there’s no ring…you’re not engaged in my eyes. lol I am bad, I know. I am very liberal on some matters, but not on this. This is a tradition in my family, and my husband’s…and it will not break. :o*

Hey Charlotte, I am truly serious. It would be a wedding gift from me. I have rings in the size of 6, 7, and 8. Please ask the future bride if she is interested in receiving a gift from me.
I am like Elvis Pressly sp who used to give gifts to strangers.

Please send me a private message with the answer. LaLucia

Try there and there. Including the part about islamic influence.

Never said. Was only talking about old-fashioned etiquette.

Chivalry is an old French word and the latter half of your sentence is a modern Anglo-Saxon feministic concept. 😛

Anyway, chivalry, in this sense, is a concept of behaviour befitting a knight, i.e. an elevated warrior. It involved respect and kindness for the weaker, including women, although the fact that women were who were giving birth, not men, was also a source of respect, as well as perhaps the respect for Our Lady radiated on all women. That was one thing. Troubadours taking too much sun to their heads and starting to worship women were a different one (and no different from how primitive peoples would worship an aeroplane :p). The same way they wrote about wars without ever having to fight one (more or less as if a scared clumsy nerd started writing about how a marine should live his life), they wrote about chivalric ideals. Results came accordingly. Real nuts were thankfully not so plenty, but it rubbed off on the masses. here is an example of the less severe nuttery. The knight looks like he’s praying to the lady and why? Because he’s attracted to her? That’s precisely what chivalry was not about in the beginning, before things took a wrong turn.
yeah yeah some women dont deserve respect…
Actually, they all do. Even if they don’t respect themselves. That’s the point of it.

Even when she assaults you with a heavy object, you need to make sure she doesn’t break a nail while at it! 😛
but give them the benefit of the doubt and behave as a gentleman regardless…
Don’t know what gave you the idea I had a problem there. 😉

Of course I do, but that’s two different things. 😉

chev, and i say this with all honesty and sincerity, your the first man to have me GENUINELY confused. or maybe its this headache i cant think straight…will return to this thread tomarrow 😃

throws in towel

Just one more link for tomorrow: Catholic Encyclopedia: Chivalry. It should help you see how things degenerated at a certain point, e.g.:

The amorous character of the new literature had contributed not a little to deflect chivalry from its original ideal. Under the influence of the romances love now became the mainspring of chivalry. As a consequence there arose a new type of chevalier, vowed to the service of some noble lady, who could even be another man’s wife. This idol of his heart was to be worshipped at a distance. Unfortunately, notwithstanding the obligations imposed upon the knightly lover, these extravagant fancies often led to lamentable results.

My fiance and I went to an antique store and found a beautiful, vintage (art deco) yellow and white gold ring, complete with diamonds, for $165.00. It’s still money, but when you compare it to any new ring (even just a plain band) it’s a way better buy. Besides, rings from the 30s and 40s were beautiful! You might tell your friend to go antique shopping. The stores we went to had literally hundreds of rings like this.

Sounds lovely. I would never have guessed such rings would be possible to buy for such a price.
