The Archdiocese of Cincinnati expanded the language of their teacher contracts this past year for implementation in the 2014-2015 school year. This is a summary article from the Cincinnati Enquirer: cincinnati.com/story/news/education/2014/03/06/catholic-teacher-contract-specifies-banned-practices/6148399/

Now a group who are trying to stop this contract have placed 12 billboards around Cincinnati that say this:

WOULD POPE FRANCIS SIGN THE NEW CATHOLIC TEACHER CONTRACT?

I say yes, he would and furthermore he was well aware of the contract and its language before it was distributed. Your opinion would be very helpful to me.

Yes he would. I don’t see a problem with what they’re asking for in the contracts. It’s all basic Catholic teachings. If you can’t follow the rules, teach somewhere else. Be a tutor.

Thanks, everyone likes to have people agree, but in my circle I am not finding a lot of agreement. I also have said go teach somewhere else if you don’t agree. I actually can’t figure out why they want to be there in the first place, Catholic school teachers make a lot of sacrifices. Why do that if it isn’t to serve God through this ministry?

I agree with you. I would like to know who is funding those billboards, and what is their real agenda?

I am a little surprised that this seems so new. Almost 30 years ago I had several interviews for different jobs with the Catholic Church, and I was point blank asked about my marital status, if I had a boy friend, and what my position was on issues of abortion, birth control and the like. From that experience I basically assumed that this was a standard held by the Church in general.

At the time I did advise a couple of my potential employers that those questions were illegal. They are, as they violate our right to privacy. However, I learned that the Church may ask these types of questions as she is doing so in relation to our expected following of the Faith. Since I live according to her teachings I really have no problem with answering them.

However, I have to question how well she can really “enforce this.” People can answer questions falsely and I suspect they do. If actually caught in a compromising position then I am sure she can take action, but otherwise I doubt she really knows just how well anyone of her employees lives up to these expectations. From my experience there a plenty who do not, and no one is the wiser. (Know of many, and when reported nothing is done.)

I think all this does is give them an avenue through which they can fire someone if the situation arises.

The people behind the billboards hope to gain enough opposition to the new contracts that the Archbishop of Cincinnati will stop the implementation of it. They are a group of people who want to see great change in our Church and it’s teachings and apparently think the Pope would agree with them,

That is the opinion of a lot of people and there may be some truth to it. Last year the archdiocese had to settle with some people they fired. One was a Dayton Catholic school teacher who was unmarried and became pregnant and was fired. Then there was an assistant principal at a Catholic high school who wrote his support on his personal blog for gay marriage, he too was let go. Clearly, there probably was some legal side to the new language to prevent the archdiocese from having to settle claims like these.

It wasn’t that she became pregnant and was unwed, it was the method to which she became pregnant. The reason that method was used was because her “partner” couldn’t make it happen! 😉

I love it when people put only bits and pieces out there so it seems like the Church is so mean and unloving towards people. You sign a contract, abide by it. But people are always going to want to have their own exceptions for their own personal situation or agenda. This is not Burger King where you can have it your way. Otherwise they should go and teach in a public school where gay civil unions, homosexuality, destruction of Christian family values, and promiscuous lifestyles for children are encouraged and taught.

In this situation, these people want a wishy washy generic “contract” that gives them the ability to do whatever they want without any accountability. That way they can bring a lawsuit when they feel “wronged” by the Church. God help us!!!

Just want to share this with you, I do think you are referring to another teacher who was fired over artificially concieving, but I couldn’t remember the exact case so I left it out, This is the one I was talking about:
daytondailynews.com/news/news/teacher-sues-church-over-pregnancy-firing/nThJR/

And, I completely agree with the rest of your comments, these are the epitome of cafeteria Catholics. I actually feel that the Archdiocese is staying way too quiet on this issue and I am anxiously awaiting the Archbishop stepping up and saying almost verbatim what you have had to say. What is the purpose of having Catholic schools if we don’t teach as well as model the CCC?! And until it changes we have certain doctrine we follow.

I sure hope they don’t remain quiet on it. I’ve been told by frustrated clergy that certain topics are not addressed as explicitly as they should be for fear of “offending” people. Wait …we’re Catholics, we offend everyone by our beliefs because they aren’t politically correct. They are God’s commandments! In my eyes, its not what the Church is doing, its what its NOT doing. I’m not trying to criticize the Church but this is a serious matter and the perservation of God’s word, our faith, begins with our children. How can we expect our children to act in the manner which we are called when we are allowing those who teach them to behave in a manner that is converse to our faith!?

My daughter goes to our parish school. She’s there because it is Catholic. I’m proud of their school and those in charge as it is solid Catholic teaching. Our experience in the past with her in public schools even at the age of 6 & 7 was awful. I pray and hope the rest of these schools and their respective Diocese step up and do things the Catholic way including setting forth the rules of conduct for teachers.

Peace!

Yep, you hit the nail square on the head with that one.

Of course he would sign! The only ones putting up these ridiculous billboards are non Catholics and cafeteria Catholics, which could be seen as the same thing! Go work in the public schools or for the Episcopal schools if you don’t like the contract. Its about time Catholic communities start taking back their schools and start teaching the faith and not just academic subjects. There are plenty of good nonsectarian private schools. But if you don’t want Catholic teaching and Catholic schools fail to teach the basics of the faith or worse, teach contrary to the faith why bother sending your child to a “Catholic” school? Why bother?!

How about a billboard that read “Would George Washington or Abraham Lincoln sign a public school teacher contract for schools that fail to teach what the Constitution really stands for?”

They are rolling over in their graves!

Pope Francis would be rolling in his grave if he saw what is being taught and not being taught in some called Catholic schools. He would be rolling in his grave because what he would see would kill him and make him toss and turn in shock!

My proposed billboard response by the Archdiocese : Yes, Pope Frances Would be Thankful to Sign the New Contract! As Would Any Real Catholic!
