I belong to a UPCI church which believes speaking in tongues is evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit. Thus, I have been told that unless you speak in tongues you are not saved. However, there is evidence for speaking in tongues in the bible but Jesus never said this was essential for salvation and therefore I disagree with the church stance on this.
As I read the bible there are a couple of cases in which people speak in tongues… the first is the day of Pentecost (Acts 2) the second is Cornelius (Acts 11). I understand why the Holy Spirit used the speaking of tongues in Acts 2, but not in Acts 11.
