Hello,
I need guidance reguarding a situation I’m in. I have been with this woman now for about 1yr 1/2 i want to propose to her and eventually marry her, But the situation is that she is Muslim and I’m catholic. And she has stated to me that in order for me to marry her I would have to convert to Islam and become a Muslim. I’m so confused. i have been a catholic all my life. been baptized, holy communion, and conformation… but I’m not an active catholic. I love this woman a great deal and want a life with her. But I’m torn a bit between what is right? If i convert will God forgive me cause i will do it for love. Please help me with advice. Thank you Regards, Alfred T.

Dear friend,

You have a major decision to make that will have eternal consequences. No one is worth turning you back on God. Be honest here. If you convert, you will be doing it to please yourself—not for your love for God. What you need to do, is start practicing your faith. You can be sure that God does want you to do this. He certainly does not want you to give up the gift of faith that He has given you. You need to know more about that faith before considering tossing it.

The emotional attachment of “falling in love” is quite transitory. Eternity is a long, long time. Use those feelings for following Him. Don’t let them control you. I am asking all those who read this to keep you in their prayers that you do the right thing.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
