Can you help give me a history of celibacy?

I was subjected to a tirade by a former Catholic over the issue of celibacy for our Priests. He claimed it was decided in the year 500, that the Apostles were not celibate and it was not Biblically Based - I did not have my bible sheet with me but told him I thought his information was incorrect and I would get back to him today with the correct information.

Can you help? I looked on Catholic Answers and did not see anything in the Library that spoke to this - but I probably missed it.
