Hey (:

So, I’m a lot younger than everyone else on here (high school age) and I’ve sort of recently discovered Jesus. I live near DC in a super liberal suburb…and no one in my family or any of my close friends are Christian. I know some people, but none of my friends, really.

So…the things I want to ask are:
–How do I find a church? I found one that looks good…but how do I know if it’s right?
–How can I tell my parents and friends? In the past, I’ve been really sure of my atheism and probably pretty rude. I don’t want to look like it was a 180 degree turnaround, because it wasn’t. Any tips?
–Any other advice?

Thanks so much-
Eleanor

Hey—back atcha,

When you say that you are looking for a church, I take it that you mean a local Catholic Church. I would suggest that you go to the Dominican House of Studies which is located across Michigan Avenue from Catholic University in D.C. and ask to speak to a priest. He should know the area and be able to put you in contact with an appropriate Catholic parish that can best suit your needs.

As for telling your parents and friends, first find a parish and pray on it. The Lord will help you to make it known. Your desire to come closer to him is the result of His invitation. He will give you the help you need.

You can write me privately if you need more help by clicking on my name.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
