Can you help me with the second commandment and images?

I am a 68 year old cradle Catholic and will be till the end, but this one question troubles me. The Second Commandment tells us not to create any graven images of anything on this earth or that is in heaven or anywhere and bow before it. Why do we have images in our churches? This is very hard to answer when our separated brothers ask.
