I would like to know if it is wrong or inappropriate to choose the name “Jesus” for a boy child. A friend believes that it contravenes the command “Don’t use the Lord’s name in vain.”

In Hispanic cultures it is very common to name a boy “Jesus.” The proper pronunciation of the Spanish name is “HAY-soos.” In Anglo cultures, the name “Jesus” (pronounced “GEE-zus”) is avoided as a matter of respect, but the names Christopher, Christian, and (for girls) Christina, are common. When used appropriately, there is certainly no violation of biblical commands.
