The catechism says its a day of silence here:

“Sunday is a time for reflection, silence, cultivation of the mind, and meditation which furthers the growth of the Christian interior life” (CCC 2186).

Could someone please answer, thanks!

Yes you can. As a matter of fact often musical instruments are played during the celebration of Mass (for example organ) and with the ongoing pandemic many people are following Mass through radio or tv. I think the silence is in this context intended as interior silence, making space for God in the noise of mundane life.

The Church is not literalist. Common sense is still accepted.

Someone playing Moonlight Sonata could be conveying a very peaceful, reflective, meditative piece of music. Someone rather new to piano and “less that skilled” but very intense and demanding of themselves far above their skill level might be making a horrible, terrible mistake (and even possibly sinning greatly) to do so on a Sunday.

Or for that matter, any other day of the week. 🙃 😜

Does your church have a choir? Do they sing and play music during Mass? If so, I think your question is answered.

It’s not a problem. We’re not required to spend all of Sunday sitting around praying for 16 hours in silence.
Take sufficient time out for God and family and prayerful activities, then enjoy the rest of your day.
