Can you sin by forgetfullness?

For example: forgetting to pray before you eat or forgetting to change your cat’s litter box.

First, NOT praying before you eat or NOT changing your cat’s litter box are **NOT **sins of any kind.

Second, forgetfullness is not a sin.
 
Neither of the things you mentioned are sins, as the previous poster pointed out. But if we are forgetful of our duties in life…it might be something we really need to focus and pray about. We should strive to keep our mind on Christ and on carrying out our responsiblities to ourselves and to others.

no you cannot sin by forgetfullness, it requires a full free will intentional act, and neither of those things is a sin anyway, even if you deliberately neglect to do them.

No, not by forgetfulness, but you can sin by omission. For example, you don’t tell a lie, but you neglect to tell the truth.

Think of the prayer “I Confess” “I have sinned through my own fault…In what I have done and what I have failed to do…”

You don’t have to commit an overt sin, but neglecting to do something that you should have done is a sin. So if you “forgot” to pray or feed your cat, make sure it really was just an accident, and not a habit or an excuse.
 
Okay, thank you for your comments.
But, surely if you deliberately didn’t change your cat’s litterbox ever it would be a sin. It would cause the cat stress and they would end up peeing on the carpet or something or just hold themselves. It would kind of be cruel to the animal.

It would never happen - you wouldn’t be able to tolerate the smell. :eek:

Well, I keep my cats’ litterboxes downstairs and they don’t like when it gets bad. It is often a week before I scoop/change it.

I think it would depend on the reason. If you are well intentioned but just not yet in the habit of doing these things, that’s one thing, but if you are attempting to “multi-task” and causing yourself to be distracted, then this could be an issue, particularly with regard to taking good care of your pet.

When we take on a pet, we assume a serious responsibility to provide for its needs. I think that forgetting the litter box once in a while is understandable, but if it’s getting to the point where the cat’s health is being harmed, or where the environment in the home is unhealthy for humans, then you need to look at the situation and make changes.

In our house, we scoop the litter box at least once a day or as needed, and we change it once a week.
 
I think someone needs to quit posting on CA and change the cat’s litterbox! 😛
 
forgetfulness is not a sin… look as hard as you might ladies… HOWEVER, actively behaving that you have forgotten when you really have just refused to do something may well be a sin by omission…
