So I have a friend who’s recently been undergoing a conversion into Christianity. They’ve been praying, believing in God and wanting to go to church etc.

I want to take them to go to church with me, but the thing is, they don’t want to ask their parents for a ride because they do have a different religious background and so they would have no ride to go to church.

I want to drive them, but the thing is that i’d have to break the law since in California, you need to have had your license for a year to drive other minors (im a minor)

If i were to drive them; would this be a sin if i were trying to do something good?

No. Two wrongs do not make a right. We are to obey the law provided it doesn’t conflict with Catholic morality, and putting an age limit on drivers is no such conflict. I’d suggest sending them a link to a livestream Mass.

Yes, it’d be a sin. It’s in the catechism somewhere where the end doesn’t justify the means. What about your parents? Would they be willing to drive your friend?

What if the law is not a big law at all.

Driving other minors is only considered a “secondary offense” where police officers can’t even pull you over. So clearly this law isn’t big at all.

And plus, the drive is only like 5-7 minutes long, so there likely isn’t any big risk or danger.

It’s still the same. It’s wrong. Doesn’t matter how big or little something is, wrong is wrong. Do you really think that knowingly doing something wrong is justified for the ‘right reason?” That is called ‘the end justifies the means’ and it is definitely NOT OK by Catholic Christian teaching.

It doesn’t matter. Breaking a little law or a big law is still wrong.

The time nor the danger matters, although you’d be surprised how much can go wrong in 5-7 minutes. Do not do this. It is illegal and sinful, no matter how small the law.

Sneaking round behind the parents back is generally never a good idea.

What then? Shall we sin so that grace may abound? By no means!

Romans 6:1

We may never sin for any reason, no matter how good that reason is, not even the slightest venial sin.

I think everyone on here would agree that you should follow the laws of your state. Laws such as this are made for a reason, and there are huge liability problems with minors driving vehicles without benefit of law. Don’t do it.

We may never do evil, even in the pursuit of good. The ends do not justify the means.

Obey the law.

The principles related to the fonts of morality are foundational to our faith.

What sort of example would this be to your friend? A bad one.

I disagree with the posters who are calling it a sin, or evil, to break this particular law. But it wouldn’t be wise to break that law either.
