I may be moving across the state soon and my wife and I are in RCIA in our current parish. Question is will we be able to continue in our new parish where we left off in the old and still be accepted into the church this coming Easter? Or will we have to wait another year. That would be soooo disappointing. Thanks for any answers especially those who may have been in the same situation.

God bless,
Jesse

I wouldn’t expect a problem. Make sure the two RCIA directors are in touch with each other so that it’s clear which rites you’ve completed, what’s happened as far as catechesis is concerned, etc.

I would speak with the priest in the new parish, it may be possible for you to join the RCIA in your new parish this year.

The way it was explained to me is that while the basic concept is the same from parish to parish there is not standard curriculum that is followed, so you may miss a subject or 2 or repeat a subject when you change classes. However, according to the deacon leading my RCIA group, most parishes will allow you to transfer into their RCIA program so long as it is before the Rite of Acceptance & Welcoming, however it is at the discretion of the parish you wish to transfer. At my parish they allow people to join the RCIA during the inquiry period but cut off allowing new people to join about 6 weeks before the Rite of Acceptance & Welcoming (which for us means the last date that someone can join RCIA in our parish for this year is Oct. 21. - this is for transfers and “new” persons)

I second this as well. My father was in your boat (sort of). He wanted to convert to Catholicism, but had to travel to Oklahoma for an extended business trip (almost 3 months). He got the DRE from our home parish in touch with the DRE for the Oklahoma parish. The Oklahoma DRE sent a letter with my dad certifying his participation in their program, which our home parish accepted.

Thanks for the responses guys! I thought it might be something like a letter or phone call from my priest here (he does the RCIA himself) to the director in the new parish. I’ve been in RCIA already for 5 months now. He conducts the class year round. Well thanks anyways.

God bless,
Jesse

yes certainly, ask for a transfer letter before you leave, detailing where you are in the process, what rites have already been received etc, and your paperwork. Arrange for the 2 RCIA directors to speak by phone or email. Try to make the contact with the new parish before you move. If you wait a few weeks you may lose valuable time.
Welcome Home!

Definitely have the RCIA director get in touch with the new Parish. We have had people move in and out of our RCIA process and I have always sent a letter or e-mail to the new parish with a detail of what the candidate or catechumen has studied and whether or not they have been through any rites. I hope this helps. good luck in your journey
