Okay, I’m sorry if this is gross, but my dear 3 week old son lost his entire breakfast (breastmilk) all down the front of me this morning, soaking my Scapular. Does anyone know if a Scapular can be washed? Mine is made of wool and I worry about it shrinking, tearing at the cords, etc. Also is there anything wrong spiritually with washing it? Any advice? Thanks 🙂

Jenny

Sure you can. Vestments worn by priests are washed, as are all the clothing worn by Religious Brothers and Nuns. I am a secular Carmelite and can tell you that I hand wash my Scapular at least once a month. I treat it with reverence each time I put it on, kissing it and saying a prayer to the Blessed Mother.

It would be no different than cleaning a blessed crucifix you wear around your neck. It’s not the “item” you wear, but the comittment you make by wearing it.

In His Peace!

Good question, it’s one I wondered myself. I’ve replaced mine before but never washed it. I think I would take a clean dish cloth, get it soapy, and hand clean it. I wouldn’t think it’d remove anything from it’s graces by keeping it clean.

IF IT IS WOOL, try a little Woolite in cold watr in the bathroom sink. Rinse well. IF IT IS A FABRIC BLEND, just use some dish detergent in the bathroom sink (or the kitchen sink). Make sure you dry it thoroughly before putting it back on.

Thanks yob guys for that info. My scapular is the 5-in-1 and the white one is next to the skin. It’s gotten grimy with body soil since you’re not supposed to take it off. I’m relieved that it can be washed.😃

I think Our Lady understands baby milk.

How does one dispose of a scapular when it is ruined and can’t be washed or repaired? Burn it, like a flag?

PS Does this thread belong on another forum?

Or bury it.

Nope, right here is fine. It involved a burping baby and laundry advice.
