How does one become a canon lawyer? What kind of academic requirements must be met? Are there other requirements as well? Thanks.

A JCL or JCD is generally required. They are degrees. It is not necessary to be a priest. Is that what you were after?

Here’s a short article from Wikipedia:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Canon_Law

Also, I know that St. Paul University here in Ottawa which is a Pontifical Catholic University) has an entire faculty of Canon Law. Basically you have to get a graduate degree in Canon Law I think as Titus said, usually a JCD, which is a doctorate program.

if you are in the states, I believe the only University which offers such a degree is the Catholic University of America. Correct me if I am wrong but I thought I remembered hearing that somewhere.

Hi ChristIsTheWay,

You should check out the following Web site:

canonlaw.info/

It is the Web site of Dr. Edward Peters. He is an American lay canon lawyer who teaches, writes, speaks, and consults canon law. He is a frequent guest on Catholic Answers Live so you might want to search for him on the radio archives.
