Hello,

I was wondering about canonized Saints. If a person is canonized, does it imply that this person went directly to Heaven, without going to Purgatory? Or is it possible that a canonized Saint was in Purgatory before (or still after) being canonized? Does someone know and have sources about this question?

I heard a theological speculation once that the reason some people take a long time to be canonized is that they are in fact saved, but still in purgatory until the time of their last miracle.
Sorry, I can’t remember where I heard it, and it might be wrong.
But I think it’s a neat theory.

Canonization is indicative that the person lived and died in a holy way, and is an official recognition of sanctity.

But that doesn’t mean that they did or did not have any business to clear up with God before being admitted into the beatific vision.
