I was confirmed 37 years ago this month – I chose St Viviana because I liked the name. I didn’t know a thing about her, and never gave her a thought until a couple years ago.

During the 35 years when I never gave her a thought, I grew close to several Saints – Therese of Lisieux, Teresa of the Andes, Teresa of Calcutta (something about that name).

I also had a couple of Saints “choose” me (Mary Magdalene and Jean Frances Chantal) through a spiritual encounter at an exposition of relics of the Saints (http://treasuresofthechurch.com/).

My point is that the gift of the Church to us of a patron Saint at confirmation is beautiful. But a deep and beautiful – even profound – connection with a Saint is not limited to that one event in our lives!

Sure, it’s nice to know who our confirmation Saint is and to ask their intercession throughout out lives. But if that Saint does not turn out to be your BFF, there’s nothing wrong with that.
