That reminds me. One thing I loved? There was no romance. And I didn’t even realize it until I had been out of the theater for a few hours.

I avoided most of the CMU movies for years as they had no draw for me. I will say, though, that what they’ve accomplished in cross overs and event movies and building up overlapping plots over 10 years of movie making has been quite an impressive cinematic feat. Infinity War last year and Endgame this year are over a decade in the making, a decade of build up.

I just went to see it last night with my wife. Overall, I enjoyed it. There were aspects of it I found kind of annoying, but seeing younger Nick Fury was a joy.

It was, sadly, incredibly predicable. I predicted the “twist” about five minutes into the movie, but that didn’t really take away from my enjoyment too much. Marvel herself was… okay. At times I really liked her, at other times she was kinda bland, but as I said above, Nick Fury was awesome throughout, and it’s worth seeing just for him.

I am a little annoyed that it looks like she’s going to be a linchpin character in Endgame. It feels like she’s being forced in more than added in naturally the way other characters have been. I just hope that the core Avengers are still the focus in Endgame. I like how it’s been set up to allow the original “first gen” Avengers to close out their story in a grandiose way, and I’m afraid that Ant Man and Marvel may detract from that. Still, there hasn’t been a Marvel movie yet that I haven’t mostly enjoyed (even Thor: Dark World), so here’s hoping.
 
I saw it last week, and I did quite enjoy it. One of the funniest MCU movies to date. However, in comparison to the other MCU movies, I’d have to place this in the lower half, probably just below Iron Man 3. I felt it was lacking in character development for Carol and that they took the whole “she’s the strongest Avenger!!!” thing too far because there was little to no tension in the fight scenes; she was ragdolling almost all of the Kree in the final fight with the exception of Yon-Rogg, who gave her a little trouble, but barely enough to pose a threat.

I collected comics starting in the late 80’s through 2005ish. I only collected specific Marvel titles which often was frustrating when story arcs went over to titles I didn’t collect. I probably have about 30 long boxes and should sell them off as I no longer collect them but they bring back such great memories. Wolverine got me started and my collection is pretty complete on his titles, including the original four. I don’t have his intro comic though.

I’d pass the collection on to someone in my family if any of them would appreciate them but my 13 year old grandson is the only possibility and even he’s kinda meh on comics. It’s what I get for being a 66 year old female weirdo!
 
I didn’t know GKC was a ‘true believer’ (in Marvel, that is).

Yeah, I’ve tried to get back into them after many years away but with the exception of Alan Moore, I can’t. Maybe that’s because the industry is in a phase where they feel they need to live up to Alan Moore’s impossibly high standards for inventiveness but all they do is produce sub-standard Moore-ish stuff. A bit like how for many years the best literary fiction read like sub-par Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

I also don’t care for the way the artwork looks nowadays. I can’t put my finger on why exactly but it looks a bit too much like Japanese anime to me.

Then there’s the fact that kids don’t really read comics anymore. The audience seems to now be men in their 30’s. That alters the equation a bit and leads to the self-referential quality you discussed.

No doubt a subset of the cultural exhaustion I see in other areas of life as well.
 
Do you mean the Star Trek movies with the younger actors or the television series, or both? This is a bit of a side argument but I was thinking that after the realism of the ‘reimagined’ Battlestar Galactica those Next Generation-type shows have become impossible to do because they seem so hokey. (I haven’t seen the latest Star Trek series - Discovery - because I refuse to subscribe to CBS all access for just one show.)

How do you watch ‘Discovery’ if you don’t mind me asking? Through what service is it available in the UK?

I saw the last Star Trek movie (‘Beyond’) and at this point found the whole gestalt of the series no longer feeling like Star Trek, more like a generic science fiction action picture.
