Here’s the rules:
  1. Post a photo of your favorite sacred art. Modern, classical, ugly, beautiful, you name it. Perhaps you could tell us what it’s called and who made it.
  2. Underneath, place a short caption - humorous, if possible. Extra credit for the absurd and surreal. Points off if you’re just mean.
I will get this party started:

“Hello, Father? It’s Jesus. Things got weird down here! I was just swallowed by a snake, and then 8 tons of bronze just exploded all around me! Yeah, I should be safe until you get here. Bye.”

I love this idea!

Hope my first caption isn’t too negative. This is genuinely my favourite image of sacred art (at the moment) though. Absolutely beautiful, inhabitable space. Facts first, caption will follow.

Facts: Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal, Canada. Built in the 1800s, renowned as a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. 11 million people visit Notre-Dame Basilica every year, presumably drawn by the stupendous beauty.

Modern Architects: “Hmm. People don’t still like this stuff, right? This would be better with a flat roof and square white walls. The closer we can get it to a boxy school gymnasium, the better. And I have a great 8-ton idea, all cast in bronze, for what to replace those quaint old saint statues with…”

I remember trying to decorate and formalize our 1960’s church a couple of years ago. My budget was about 3 or 4000. I was asking around for ideas and someone sent me pictures of this church. 😨 😏

Makes you feel about an inch high haha.

Ahaha!

Yeah that’s a tall order for a small budget.

I suppose for most of us the idea is to adapt from the things that inspire us, by identifying what it is about them that we like (colour? light? sense of space that raises the eye upward? pleasing symmetry and geometric shapes?) and finding a budget-fitting way to at least begin to apply some of those principles to our case. (E.g. it’s miraculous what can be done with light and paint.)

We may not all end up with Notre-Dame Basilica, but I reckon there’s often at least a step we can take towards something we like about her.

Again though I imagine it’d be highly intimidating to be the person tasked with trying, on a small budget for a public-usage building about which many people probably have divergent (and loudly expressed) opinions. You have my sympathies.

What am I going to do with these people?

Dunno why this thread hasn’t picked up more, but I like it, so 🙂

It was picturesque, but the paddle to morning Mass was starting to get to Sally.

“Listen, I really appreciate the thought, but he just fell asleep.”

“Lawrence, I appreciate your wordplay, but you know perfectly well I meant this kind of treasure.”
