(I hope this is posted in the correct place)

I’m careful on who I listen to and take my learning from. I don’t want to learn bad Catholic teachings being new at this. I don’t know the right terms to use when speaking Catholic-ese, please forgive me.

I’m listening to Cardinal Arinze on You-Tube and really like what he says. So, before I take in his teachings, is he okay to listen to and is he in-line with the Vatican’s Teachings?

I used to listen to Fr. Corapi and looked him up yesterday and found some things that may not be right with him…I did like him. Is it okay to listen to his messages? I don’t want to go against the Vatican.

I’m finding out there are sites that claim to be Catholic that we need to be careful of, they will lead a Catholic astray.

Thank you for your perspective, please keep this light and respectful of persons.

I don’t have any problems with him or his sound theology. He seems to be quite understandable in the English-speaking world.

He is very understandable. I’m glad his theology is sound…that’s what I’m looking for. I really like him. Thank you.

Yes, Cardinal Arinze was one of the top advisers to Popes John Paul and Benedict. He is quite orthodox.

I don’t think that there is anything wrong with listening to old Father Corapi videos. He had disciplinary problems but I don’t think that his public teaching was ever incorrect.

For six years, first under JP2 and then under B16, Arinze was Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. For a large part of those six years (speaking from memory) Donald Trautman was the head of the Liturgy Committee in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The two of them were in constant conflict, basically because Arinze saw it as his mission to ensure that Catholic worship should be the same in every country, as far as that can be achieved given the large number of languages in use, while Trautman’s main concern was to impose “inclusive language” and other novelties on Catholic worship in the United States.

Others have answered you regarding Cardinal Arinze, so . . . Fr. Corapi, at one time, was an excellent person to listen to. However, he later went astray – I won’t go into details, I’m sure there are abundant sources on the internet – so I would be careful about any of his later talks. Best to stick with earlier ones.

I don’t believe any of his talks were ever a problem. I heard him speak shortly before his problems came to light and they were excellent. I still don’t know the full story of his sad situation but I pray for him every day. I have many of his talks and would never be afraid to share them. All his talks are great. God Bless, Memaw

I agree on both. Cardinal Arinze is excellent. God Bless, Memaw

What, specifically, about Cardinal Arinze’s talks are you concerned about?

Not only Arinze, but African Prelates in general are very Orthodox and strong defenders of the faith. Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana and Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea are good examples.

This is because they have firsthand knowledge and experience with issues that will pose great challenges to the Church in future, such as Christian/Islamic relations (including religious violence by Islamic extremists, which is threatening Christians here and in the Middle East),
poverty, fighting government oppression and utopian totalitarianism (a lot of African countries have been impoverished due to state socialism imposed by self appointed regimes, a point Cardinal Sarah noted) and evangelizing-a field in which the Church in Africa has actually been very successful ,as Catholics are now the largest Christian community in almost every country on the continent (Cardinal Arinze can attest to this as he himself is a convert).

By definition, a cardinal is “Vatican approved.” How else would he become a cardinal? 😛

Which is not to say that each individual cardinal possesses the charism of infallibility. Just look at the last synod. Even cardinals disagree with each other on certain matters.

As others noted, Cardinal Arinze served in a top Vatican post for many years and is now retired. I’ve never heard anyone question his orthodoxy.

It seemed Arinze’s conflict was more with the ICEL, which lobbied for the vernacular at Vatican II but somehow ended up setting new doctrinal standards, such as “for you and for all men” in the consecration not only in English but in other languages as well which depended on the English for its translations. It’s been fixed in the English but I understand some of the other languages still have “all” in their consecrations. That ICEL still profits from the royalties collected from the translations can’t sit too well with the Cardinal either.

Just a couple of weeks ago Sandro Magister tipped Robert Sarah of Guinea as a hot contender at the next conclave. Sarah is now 69 – he will be 70 next month.

If you’re asking about what Memaw said, I believe she was referring to Father Corapi, not Cardinal Arinze. Father Corapi’s early videos are spot on, orthodox Catholic teaching. I really loved watching him preach. They were made prior to the “incidents” that happened later on, concerning him.

Your right I do believe Fr. Corapi’s talks were spot on. Cardinal Arinze is great and at one time he was a real contender as favored for Pope. Thanks, God Bless

It is definitely okay to listen to him.
I was actually hoping he would become Pope but I guess his age was against him.

I agree. He was considered Papabile after the death of St. John Paul the Great. But, following Benedict-16’s Papacy, he was rather old. Alas, he is now 82.

I think he would have made a very fine Pope.
