Cardinal Dolan the only Cardinal that doesn't kiss the Pope's ring

I was just looking at the video seeing everyone kiss the ring and then one doesn’t and then everyone after does. I mean that is about the only thing going on in the video. Kinda hard to miss so I asked the question. Sorry for even asking.

Of all of the Cardinals, Cardinal Dolan is the only one to not kiss the Pope’s ring. Why? See for yourself at 2:50.

Cardinal Dolan is not the only prelate who does not kiss the papal ring. Many of the younger prelates don’t do so.

The majority of the cardinals are older men. Kissing the ring of a pope or a bishop comes very spontaneously to them.

Pope Benedict abolished the kissing of the ring, but did not prohibit it. He simply deleted the rule from the book of protocol used in the Vatican. Younger bishops and cardinals, who never developed the habit of kissing the ring won’t be doing so.

That’s all. Not a major issue here.

I have only been able to watch snippets on TV. What about the other US Cardinals? Did they all kiss his ring? I didn’t notice, but I would assume it is part of our “everyone’s equal” philosophy that expanded to every part of life.

He’s not a New Yorker, he’s a St. Louisan :). And he loves Benedict XVI, anyone who’s watched anything since he was made a Cardinal can plainly see that. And since it’s already been proven that other Cardinals also didn’t kiss the ring, he obviously wasn’t trying to be disprespectful or rebellious or show some hidden dissidence to Church teaching.

Thanks! Glad to have a protocol expert here. 😛 I assumed it was either and age thing or a US thing and not some deliberate disrepect.

Looking forward to more of your insight as we watch the conclave unfold and a new Pope emerge!

At times it was hard to tell who was who, because we were getting a profile. I can’t say.

Some are talking about the Cardinal as if he was an idiot. That’s not fair. The man is neither an idiot nor disrespectful. The man knows the rules of protocol. He knows what is required and what is optional. We need to stop imposing what is optional on others. That borders on becoming my brother’s law giver, a very dangerous role.

:confused: How is what I said harsh? I gave valid, charitable reasons as to why Dolan didn’t kiss the Pope’s ring and then mentioned how upsetting all the current bad-mouthing of the Cardinals has been. All you have to do is browse through the threads to see the bad-mouthing for yourself. I then mentioned that gossip and slander is sinful, which it is. It’s in the Bible and the Catechism.

Lastly I expressed the hope that you weren’t intending to be mean-spirited since I don’t know you and was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. How is that harsh?
 
Hi Hudson, I was thinking about the protocol of kissing the Pope’s ring earlier today and where this practice came from. I don’t think your question was out of the ordinary.

Hi JReducation, thank you for clarifying Hudson’s question. For me personally, I find it a strange custom, because it seems like one is paying homage. I don’t do it when I meet the Archbishop or Cardinal in my area. But I still give the respect just the same.

Thank you for this simple answer. I wish that people who didn’t know the answer would just shut up without the need to speculate and accuse. (Not that I am not continuously guilty of this also.)

p.s. Sometimes I think I would be better off if I just subscribed to your posts and a few other peoples posts on this site.
