I’ve heard, now and then, an interesting opinion. It states that if Blessed John Henry Newman is canonized, he will also most probably be the next to be declared a Doctor of the Church. His development of doctrine teachings are usually cited as a reason for this.

Any thoughts?

I think it’s quite possible, and I for one would applaud. 👍

His “Apology” was the final straw that converted me from Anglicanism (Newman was a convert from the Anglican Church, and wrote his Apology to explain his conversion).

His Apology is perhaps the most difficult book I have ever read. I’ve read books on quantum physics that I’ve found easier to understand.

But I plowed through it, and I was rewarded with the Catholic Faith. He surmounted each and every obstacle.

I had never read the complete text of any Doctor of the Church. But I read Newman, and I have never looked back.

Cradle Catholics have their Doctors. But Anglican converts have their own Angelic Doctor, and it is not Aquinas, but Newman.

It is high-time for the Church to recognize Newman as Saint and Doctor.

This hope has been around for quite a while. One of the articles that started active consideration for Blessed J. H. Newman’s cause was in America magazine (November 22, 1941, p. 173). In it, Charles J. Callan, O.P. stated:
"I feel sure that I am expressing the thoughts and sentiments of thousands upon thousands of Catholics and non-Catholics, at home and abroad, among the clergy and among the laity, of both English-speaking and foreign countries, when I say that I hope the time is not too far in the future when John Henry Newman will be raised to the veneration of our altars and be declared a Doctor of the Church.

“If we but examine the life and works of this extraordinary churchman, I think we shall find that he has all the qualifications which will entitle him to this singular place and honor.”

For several years now, in my daily prayer for his canonisation, I’ve asked God that he may soon be numbered among the holy saints and be declared a Doctor of the Church. Oh how I loved reading the Apologia! the first book I read of his, but my copy had tons of notes explaining the background; without them I know I wouldn’t have gotten as much out of it, b/c he mentions so many different things and people. I read the whole thing out loud – I’d drive home each night and wonder what’s going to happen today in the book? It was very exciting reading! But I must admit it was reading his letters (about 20,000+) that just really brought him to life for me and impressed me with his sanctity and wisdom and wide influence.

amsjj 🙂

Jesus, God and man,
imprisoned by love in Thy most holy Sacrament,
have mercy upon us.
  • Blessed John Henry Newman, December 22, 1851
God loves to be resisted in His displeasure, and to be restrained by the humble from inflicting punishment… One saint will often save a nation; so true is it that humble souls are the hinges on which God moves the world.
