hi im an aspiring director and my friend wants to be an actor, we recently met this guy whos the assistant director of an independent film and started talking with him. he knows a lot about acting and directing but within the past 2 weeks, every time we go talk with him, it seems like he rarely teaches us anything about acting or directing and instead talks to us about buddhism and stories relating to “lifes journey” and how it relates to film…

it seems like he is trying to say that Christianity is false and so are all religions, but doesnt directly come out and say it. now hes a nice guy and knows alot, but me and my friend feel like hes trying to feed us all these things about buddhism and tibetan monks and all these weird things, he never stops talking about it.

what should we do, stick with him and learn about film and ignore everything else or find someone else to teach us?

thank you God bless

I guess it depends, you could give another test. Since he hasn’t been teaching you about directing and acting you may want to steer the conversations towards that and away from the Buddhism. Say things like “I see, that’s cool, but one thing that I’ve been thinking about is this…” Non-sequitar? Yeah, but people do that all the time. You may also want to check out this guy’s movies and see if he is someone that you do want to learn from. If he can’t get past trying to teaching you the Eight Fold Path, you may want to try taken another one.

Buddhism is a very intresting subject and somthing that should be looked at by everyone to one degree or another. But try to steer the conversation away from religious beliefs. I would simply explain to him that as facinating as the things are that hes teaching you. You would much rather utalise his knowledge of directing.

Failing this you could propose another idea. Which would be to set a hypothasised screen play about ‘his lifes journey’ somthing like a biopic. This would give him the medium for portraying his beliefs somthing i guess he really wants to share, and would give you the working knowledge of how to bring a screen play to life.
