So I’m 18 and trying to find out a job I can be self employed in. Because I plan to move into the country and start a family. I was thinking of being a carpenter or a blacksmith. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think you started a thread about becoming a missionary not long ago? Any leads there for you?

I’ll grow my own food and raise livestock. But it isn’t a reliable income unless I have thousands of dollars worth of equipment and 50 acres of corn

Carpenters need to live near where there is work, near growing cities.
Blacksmithing is more a hobby than a career.

Focus on what you are good at.

I second vocational school. Learn a trade that you can use if only part time and be your own boss.

There is a wonderful scene in Zefferelli’s movie, “Jesus of Nazareth” where Joseph is teaching the young boy Jesus the trade of a carpenter. He says to his step-son, “Treat the wood gently, remember, only a man who can work with his hands is truly free.” Find a trade at which you are good, one that is in demand and will provide an abundance of customers, and then be the best at it you can be. Mechanic, carpenter, stone mason, plumber, painter, roofer, etc. etc. Maybe even a computer repair person. Good luck!
Shalom.
