There is little said about the thinking, about Hell, during the time of Christ by the Jews. Christ said to the good thief, “This day you will be with Me in Paradise”. Paradise was the first tier of Hell followed by five more tiers. The second and maybe the third tier was made up of sinners who had committed mortal sins, but through long term suffering they could enter Heaven. The last tier was for people who committed such grave sins, such as multi muders or killings, they would burn forever in Hell. When Catholics talk about Purgatory is it not Paradise. Please reply

Pssss… I think its Karl, not Carl.

God Bless.

Hi Tomgast,

I agree. Remember though, the Church doesn’t teach “Where” Purgatory is. I personally believe it is in the upper part of Hell as St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Robert Bellarmine did. Most of the verses in scripture support that although not all of them. Are you aware of where Purgatory is taught in Scripture?

May God bless,

James224

Hi Tomgast,

Correction: You said - “When Catholics talk about Purgatory is it not Paradise.” Sorry but I didn’t catch this in my first response.

My Reply: It has to be otherwise where did the good thief go? He couldn’t go to heaven because Christ had not ascended and opened the gates of heaven. The only other possibliity is that he went to the Bosom of Abraham which sometimes is referred to as the Limbo of the Fathers.

May God bless,

James224

Aquinas did not teach the Purgatory is the upper part of hell. You are thinking about “limbo.”

Read Dante’s Divine Comedy for an interesting Thomistic view of the afterlife (not to mention the beautiful poetry and interesting social commentary).
