Can anyone please tell me the verse where Jesus commanded his disciples to carry a sword? Thank You.

Hello Andrew,

At the Last Supper.

**NAB LUK 22:35 **

“…And the man without a sword must sell his coat and buy one.”

THis verse is a great example of one of the very problematic ways in which many interpret scripture.

Many read all commands in the Bible as if they are personal commands directed toward them (the modern day reader). They would therefore, for instance, think that the Bible requires us today to sell our jackets and buy swords. He doesn’t. This command was given for specific people in a specific historical situation. It is so important to take the context of a verse into account. This is a great example of why,

There are problems for me:

I refuse to obey the literal command until the Summer.

Even if I did sell my coat it would not raise anywhere near enough to buy a sword. Perhaps a bad quality el-cheapo little plastic sword from the local grot shop, but not a real one.

In literal terms I therefore presume Jesus had no concept of winter weather further from the equator and no concept of economics in 21st century Britain.

Lucky I’m not really so literal minded.

When Jesus sent the 72 out on mission they were preforming many miracles and needed nothing to maintain themselves. Jesus is making it clear that things will not be like that now.

Where in the old days it was more important to protect ones self, in modern society we pay taxes to have police and military protect us. So, in a sence, we as tax payers, are selling our coat to buy a sword. Our first concern is law, order, protection and freedom. After that we work on providing clothing for the poor. In a lawless society there would be no logic in clothing the poor just to have lawless muraduers steal from, rape and murder the poor and common people.

NAB LUK 22:35
He asked them, “When I sent you on mission without purse or traveling bag or sandals, were you in need of anything?” “Not a thing,” they replied. He said to them: "Now , however, the man who has a purse must carry it; the same with the traveling bag. And the man without a sword must sell his coat and buy one.

Jesus’s command was for us to be well armed – whether that be with a sword, or a gun or some other means of self defense which is effective.

I, personally, have over three dozen swords but they would not be the weapon that I reached for if I, or my family, were in danger.

You mean the way that over 800,000 calls to 911 last year took over an hour for the police to respond?

As JP2 officially said …
“In a world marked by evil, the right of legitimate defence by means of arms exists. This right can become a serious duty for those who are responsible for the lives of others, for the common good of the family or of the civil community. This right ALONE can justify the possession of arms.”
