Carrying of the cross contradiction

“…and [Pilate] handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished. As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.” -Luke 23: 25-26

“Then [Pilate] handed him over to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.” -John 19: 16-17

Luke seems to imply that Simon was given the cross right away, but John implies that Jesus carried it all the way to Golgotha.
 
Say there is an accident and there is a witness on each corner.

Each witness gives his account. Some will include details that others did not.

A most complete account is gotten by taking the agreed accounts and adding the details above and beyond.
 
That’s an old one. The NET footnote for John 19:17 says:

As was customary practice in a Roman crucifixion, the prisoner was made to carry his own cross. In all probability this was only the crossbeam, called in Latin the patibulum, since the upright beam usually remained in the ground at the place of execution. According to Matt 27:32 and Mark 15:21, the soldiers forced Simon to take the cross; Luke 23:26 states that the cross was placed on Simon so that it might be carried behind Jesus. A reasonable explanation of all this is that Jesus started out carrying the cross until he was no longer able to do so, at which point Simon was forced to take over.

Also, Luke’s “as they led Him away” is too broad to explicitly denote the start of the journey as you suggest IMHO.

One could interpret that to say that they both caried it with Jesus in front and Simon holding up the rear portion. It is often portrayed that way.
