Yow!
Former President Jimmy Carter yesterday condemned all abortions and chastised his party for its intolerance of candidates and nominees who oppose abortion.
“I never have felt that any abortion should be committed – I think each abortion is the result of a series of errors,” he told reporters over breakfast at the Ritz-CarltonHotel, while across town Senate Democrats deliberated whether to filibuster the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. because he may share President Bush and Mr. Carter’s abhorrence of abortion.

While Mr. Carter has previously expressed ambivalence about abortion, his statements yesterday were “astonishing,” said Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute at Concerned Women for America.

C-SPAN INTERVIEWS JIMMY CARTER. JIMMY CARTER CLAIMS THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS NO CHANCE OF WINNING THE WHITE HOUSE IN THE NEAR FUTURE IF IT DOES NOT CHANGE ITS STANCE AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS ABORTION. CARTER INSINUATES THAT MANY DEMOCRATS (OR THOSE CENTRIST/INDEPENDENTS LEANING TOWARDS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY) WHO HAVE MORAL CONVICTIONS OR FAITH **CANNOT **IDENTIFY WITH JOHN KERRY OR OTHER DEMOCRATS CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH. I AGREE AND MANY OF MY FRIENDS HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR THE LAST SIX TO EIGHT YEARS. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Exactly. I just told my husband this about two hours ago.

“Do you really think so?” he said.

“Yes, I do.”

Now I can tell him that Jimmy Carter backs me up!

You have to hand it to Carter. He was never one to follow the crowd; I hope the Dems take this to heart.
I’m going to email this to the Dems I know.

This is refreshing news, coming from a Democratic leader like President Carter. But I wonder how many liberal Democrats will understand this?

I remember that Carter was strongly anti-abortion in the lead-up to the Iowa Caucuses. After his initial victories he switched to pro-abortion to bring in the support of the party leaders.

I’m going to need to see some action before I believe him again.

Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me.

I see your point but I believe that Carter is Anti-abortion and Pro-life (literally) … we say that we must judge a tree by it’s fruit and Jimmy Carter’s fruit is good and sweet … and he has nothing to prove concerning his intentions. Carter has always been an open book … and a good man. The US presidency was not good enough for him because he was not a snake. Why did I say snake because politics is generally not an occupation for nice guys.

And yet I would guess that most of Carter’s federal judicial appointments come down on the pro-abortion side.

Carter is Pro-Life ??? what is he doing now? What is he doing now? He does not give lip service to his compassion for human life. He has always been humble, he has admitted his faults in the past. Yet, he respects all human life. He does not get so caught up in political ideology that he is not willing to work with others who may not share all of his ideas on socio-politics. Jimmy Carter is Pro-life. I would rather have a Pro-life Democrat in office who fights for the social rights of all than a Republican who gives lip service to the Pro-life movement and does not care about the social rights of everyone. Everyone has a right to life and the social rights that leads to a great quality of human life. I am tired of the loonies on the left and the right. No more snakes or wolves with sheep skins! I want a lamb with the heart of a lion.

Or in Carter’s case a chameleon with the heart of a lemming.

I don’t think Carter was the best President when it comes to foreign affairs or the economy. However he was one of my favorite people when he was in. I loved his ideas. I don’t like many things he has done lately, until this past news story. I did catch him on LKL one night saying this same thing. Bravo Jimmy Carter. I hope the Dems listen to him.

I caught a bit of a Carter interview on the PBS program NOW the other day. He’s an internationalist and an idealist, and has pretty much accepted the Planned Parenthood line of population control. (Kind of Wilsonian in the idea that the League of Nations can solve world problems.)

He brought up the subject of Ugandan success against AIDS, using ABC (Abstinence, Be faithful, Condoms.) But he seemed to give most of the credit to the “C” and was upset that that condom use is being discouraged. In fact, the success of the Ugandan program has been due to the success of the premarital abstinence and faithfulness in marriage message.

That would be my guess. While I appreciate his statements and hope they open the eyes of many people, I can’t help but think he’s still quite the opportunist, IMHO always striving to remain relevant at any cost. We can’t forget he really wasn’t a champion of life while President, and his unfailing support of UN population programs is disappointing.

Let’s remember, he appointed Sarah Wellington, the lead lawyer on Roe v. Wade, as his “special advisor” while President.

I hope his current “conviction” is sincere for his sake and I do continue to hope his statements do indeed serve as a wake up call for leftists.

I don’t think saying an abortion is the result of a “series of errors” is exactly the same as saying abortion IS an error. I, for one, don’t give this much weight more than to think it’s purely a political calculation on his part.

its odd how many thousands (if not millions) of people are personally pro life but dont want to deny others the “right” to abortion. Ill bet if pro lifers actually acted pro life, the pro-aborts wouldnt have any mainstream members left.

Although I heartily agree with Mr. Carter’s statement that the Democratic Party’s staunch support of completely unrestricted aborion is driving away many party members, and that many Democrats are unable to identify with John Kerry and those of his ilk, I am slightly suspicious that this statement may have been “planted” at the urging of the more left-leaning Democrats in the interest of trying to appeal to more moderate Democrats and Democrats with strong religious values.

Jimmy Carter is a very smart man 👍 :clapping: I hope the media picks this up and reports it

While I’d rather see a pro-life dem in office than a wishy-washy republican, it would be even better to see the culture of death turn on itself and commit involuntary suicide as more and more dems vote republicans into office because they are pro-life.

In other words, I’m not particularly interested in the best interests of the democratic party, no offense to any dems out there…
