Carter leads conference to help mend Baptist split (New Baptist Covenant)

President Jimmy Carter played a key roll in calling together the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant — a convocation of Baptist denominations and organizations meeting next week in Atlanta. As many as 20,000 people — African American, white, Asian and Latino — are expected.

Baptists have split into various denominations over the decades because of theological and political issues such as slavery and social action.

The Atlanta convocation will bring some of them back together, at least for three days. On the agenda: preaching, speeches by political figures as diverse as former Democratic Vice President Al Gore and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, work sessions on evangelism and preaching, sessions with leading voices on social issues such as HIV, poverty, justice, faith and public policy and human trafficking.
