i’m a cashier at wal-mart. customer was buying a magic 8 ball and, as many Catholics do, i believe i believe fortune-telling and occult things like that and Ouija boards and stuff are morally wrong as well as dangerous. i’m pretty sure that i’m not responsible for it even though i sold it since i was just doing my job, but i still felt really bad about it. would love some reassurance and advice about how a conscientious catholic should handle such things.

If you weren’t cashiering someone else would have done the order.

If you refused it wouldn’t have prevented them from buying it.

You aren’t essential to them purchasing such a thing nor are you involved in its use.

You didn’t encourage it.

Your cooperation is very distant and remote, you aren’t morally culpable for it.

Never mind the fact that a Magic 8 Ball is a harmless toy, and is no more a tool of sorcery than a pair of dice. It’s different from a Ouija board, which is used by summoning spirits.

When my sister and I are in Target or Wal Mart and see an Eight Ball, we always ask a couple of questions and get a good laugh out of it. It’s just a toy; it has no magical powers.
